In the next 8 weeks, donors will make a lot of gifts to nonprofit organizations. They will make repeat gifts, larger gifts, new gifts. Many of these gifts will be made during the very last week of the year. So, what is your plan for January?
Donor cultivation feels like a lot of work for unresourced nonprofit staff, but we have 3 hints that require a small investment of time, but will reap significant rewards.

1. |
Thank your donors, and be mindful of all the types of thank you messages they receive. Ensure that your online thank you messages are as thoughtful as your mail acknowledgements. But also think about less conventional places. When supporters watch a video on You Tube, does the text under the video thank them for watching or engage them to find out more? |
| |
2. |
Welcome your new donor – on Facebook, by email, and in the mail. Make them feel great about supporting your mission. |
| |
3. |
Create an integrated calendar. The creation of a detailed calendar enables you to create a stream of communications that will help grow your list as well as effectively engage your current online constituents. A comprehensive strategy would take into account: |
| |
|
- Special events and community activities
- Volunteer opportunities
- The direct mail schedule
- Advocacy actions
- Online campaigns that encourage user-generated content.
